The Chickies First Day Out

Byron put the top on the chicken run, and since it was such a lovely day we decided to let the chickies out of the chicken house. We graciously opened the little door to the runway leading to the ground. Our chickens not so graciously ran to the back of the house and cowered there. Not one would even attempt a daring peek out of the small door.

With me opening the egg door and shooing the chicks to the front of the house, Byron caught each one and placed them in the grass. After the wing flapping and squawking subsided they seemed to enjoy basking in the sun and pecking at the weeds and bugs.

This evening we decided that with the temps dropping it would be best to make sure each chick made it safely back into the chicken house. We found out the little guys wouldn't (possibly couldn't) climb back up into the house. So Byron proceeded to chase the chickens around the chicken run until he caught each one and placed it securely in the house. It's hilarious how much we enjoy all the trouble these little critters cause. So tonight they are all snug in their finally complete house and run. The girls did name three of the chickens today. When our neighbor asked them what they were going to name them they informed her, "Daddy said we can't name animals we are going to eat." I told them we are not going to eat the hens. They can name them.

Brownie, named by Talia
Not yet named
Cocktail - Named by Seleste (Don't ask me where she got that name from)
Lu Lu (the brown leghorn) - named by all of us

No Names the Meat Birds

I think you should name the nameless non-meat chicken BOBCAT! Just Kidding. I can't believe how fast they are growing. They aren't as cute as they used to be, but I still don't think you are going to be able to kill any of them...even the nameless ones. Does Seleste know that you plan to eat them? If so has she strapped herself to the chicken coop yet? Don't get me wrong I love to eat chicken as much as the next gal, but I don't think I could do it to chickens that I know. When I was a kid I couldn't eat the Easter Peeps unless someone tore off the head because I didn't want them looking at me while I ate them! True story. ;-)

Hmm...what happened to the sweet lil chickies?? They are starting to look like...chickens! Bring on the BBQ sauce.
Riya, speaking of tearing off the peeps heads, do you remember the shrimp boil when we were down there? I was definitely NOT going to eat any because they still had eyes and were looking at me and you were like "you have to, you're in New Orleans!" I was like "Nope, not happenin'!" and a little while later you came over with some shrimp in a bowl and they were headless, veinless, and shell-less! You did all that so I would eat them. lol! Anyway, that was one of the sweetest things someone has done for me and it's always been a fond memory of you. :) I probably told you that when we first started blogging together (I forget!) so if that's redundant, I blame my old age.

Ok, back to the chickens. Sorry Kristi for hijacking your blog. lol!

That's the way it always goes here, too. They don't want to go out, and then they can't figure out how to get back in! Mine are always huddled in a mass right underneath the ramp into the coop.
